How to File a Protection Order
Regardless of which Protection Order you are seeking, the process is the same. You can obtain a Temporary Order at the Blair County Court House, 423 Allegheny Street, Suite 365, in Hollidaysburg between 8:00am-2pm. The process may take a few hours, so we recommend showing up as early as possible. Filing a Protection Order is free and can be filed regardless of whether criminal charges are being filed or your citizen status.
If you are in immediate danger outside of those hours on weekdays, weekends, or holidays, Emergency Orders are available. Emergency Orders are in effect until the next business day. You will need to file for a Temporary Order at the Courthouse the very next business day before the Emergency Order expires.
You can file for an Emergency Order at either:
- Your local Magisterial District Judge’s Office when it is open
- Your local police department
Legal Advocates at the courthouse will assist in filing the Temporary Order, as well as help you Plan For Your Safety after filing and connect you with other resources if needed.
When you file the Temporary Order, you will need to appear in front of the judge that same day. Be prepared to write a statement to include the reasons you are petitioning for the order.
A final hearing will be set 7-10 days from the initial filing of the Temporary Order.
During the final hearing, you and the opposing party will be present, but in separate waiting areas. Advocates will also be present with you to support you through the hearing process.
