Domestic abuse, also known as relationship abuse or intimate partner violence, is a pattern of behavior used to gain power and control over another person in a relationship.
People who are dating or married can experience abuse. LGBTQ+ couples experience abuse in similar and different ways and at higher rates. Family and household members also experience abuse in those relationships.
What may start out as seemingly harmless (ie, wanting you to spend all your time with them) can escalate into extreme control and abuse (ie, threatening to hurt or kill you, themselves, or others if you speak to family or friends, etc.)
Abusive power and control always intensifies over time. No one has the right to control you or force you to do anything you don’t want to do. Consent must always be given.
By contrast, healthy relationships, where both people are equal, have trust, communication, accountability, and respect at the core of the relationships.
If you are experiencing abuse, you are not alone and you don’t deserve it. We can help Plan for Your Safety.
